Sewing needle (Prym 124119)

MS=Main shade; 1st C= 1st colour; 2nd C= 2nd colour; 3rd C= 3rd colour; 4th C= 4th colour; ch=chain; st(s)=stitch(es); ss=slip stitch; dc=double crochet; tr=treble;  rep=repeat; RS=right side; sp=space; picot=3 ch, ss into side of last dc worked.

17sts and 19 rows to 10cm (double crochet) on 4.00mm hook or size needed to achieve stated tension.

It is important to check your tension before starting your garment. If there are too many stitches to 10cm, your tension is tight and you should change to a larger size hook. If there are too few, your tension is loose and you should change to a smaller size hook.

Basic Square (approx. 15 cm x 15 cm)

With 4 mm hook and C, make 6 ch and join with a ss to form a ring.

Round 1 – (RS), 3 ch (counts as tr), 15 tr into ring, ss to top of 3 ch at beg of round (16 sts).

Round 2 – 5 ch (counts as 1 tr and 2 ch), *1 tr into next tr, 2 ch; rep from * 14 times more, ss to 3rd of 5 ch at beg of round.

Round 3 – Ss into first ch sp, 3 ch (counts as first tr), 2 tr into same ch sp, 1 ch, (3 tr into next 2 ch sp, 1 ch) 15 times, ss to top of 3 ch at beg of round. Fasten off.

Round 4 – In MS rejoin yarn in 1 ch space, 1 dc into ch sp, 3 ch, 1 dc into next ch sp, 6 ch, * 1 dc into next ch sp, (3 ch, 1 dc into next ch sp) 3 times, 6 ch; rep from * twice more, (1 dc into next ch sp, 3 ch) twice, ss into first dc.

Round 5 – Ss into first 3 ch sp, 3 ch, 2 tr into same ch sp, into next 6 ch arch work (5 tr, 2 ch, 5 tr), * 3 tr into each of next three 3 ch sps, into next 6 ch arch work(5 tr, 2 ch, 5 tr); rep from * twice more, 3 tr into each of next two 3 ch sps, ss to top of 3 ch as beg of round.

Round 6 – 1 ch, 1 dc into same st as ss, 1 dc into each of next 2 tr, 1 picot, 1 dc into each of next 5 tr, (1 dc, 1 picot, 1 dc) into next 2 ch sp, 1 dc into each of next 5 tr, * 1 picot, (1 dc into each of next 3 tr, 1 picot) 3 times, 1 dc into each of next 5 tr, (1 dc, 1 picot, 1 dc) into next 2 ch sp, 1 dc into each of next 5 tr; rep from * twice more, 1 picot, (1 dc into each of next 3 tr, 1 picot) twice, ss into first dc, Fasten off.

Note: When working second and following squares, join together at the picots by working 1 ch, ss into picot of adjoining square, 1 ch, ss into side of last dc worked.

Bag

Make 27 crocheted squares (3 x 3 squares each for front and back, 3 squares for each side and 3 squares for base) making 6 squares with centre worked in each colour and 3 squares all in white to use for the base. Place the other squares as desired.

Bag Top

With MS, rejoin yarn to a dc, 1 ch, 1 dc into each dc to end, taking yarn around back of picots, ss into 1 ch at beg of round.

Work 1 more round.

Next round

Work in dc omitting every 6th dc to end.

Work 1 more round, fasten off.

Straps (make 2)

With 4.00mm hook and MS, make 101 ch.

Foundation row – (RS), In MS, 1dc into 2nd ch from hook, 1dc into each ch to end (100sts).

Row 1 – In 1st C, 1 ch (does NOT count as st), 1dc into each dc to end, turn.

Row 2 – In MS, as row 1.

Row 3 – In 2nd C, as row 1.

Row 4 – In MS, as row 1. fasten off.

Work second strap using 3rd C in place of 1st C and 4th C in place of 2nd C.

Sew in ends.

Attach each handle to front or back panels of bag, making sure not to twist the strap.
