how to work the design
 
Back
With 3¾ mm needles and M, cast on 87 (97, 107, 117) sts.
1st row (right side) – *K1, P1; repeat from * to last st, K1.
2nd row – *P1, K1; repeat from * to last st, P1.
Repeat these 2 rows until work measures 6 cm, ending with a wrong-side row.
Change to 4½ mm needles.
Beginning with a knit row, continue in st-st, decreasing 1 st at each end of every following 5th row until 77 (87, 97, 107) sts remain, then increasing 1 st at each end of every following 8th row until there are 87 (97, 107, 117) sts.
Continue straight until work measures 36 cm, ending with a wrong-side row.
Shape Armholes
Cast off 6 (7, 8, 9) sts at beginning of next 2 rows – 75 (83, 91, 99) sts.
Decrease 1 st at each end of next 6 rows – 63 (71, 79, 87 ) sts.  Join in B.
Next row – *K2B, 2M; repeat from * to last 3 sts, K2B, 1M.
Break off yarns.
Join in A and work 3 rows in st-st.
Continue from chart, thus:
1st row (right side) – Work 1 (5, 3, 1) sts before dotted line, work 12-st pattern repeat 5 (5, 6, 7) times, work 2 (6, 4, 2) sts beyond dotted line.
2nd row – Work 2 (6, 4, 2) sts before dotted line, work 12-st pattern repeat 5 (5, 6, 7) times, work 1 (5, 3, 1) sts beyond dotted line.
Continue as now set until all 11 rows have been worked.
Continue in A only until armhole measures 20 (22, 24, 26) cm from beginning of armhole shaping, ending with a wrong-side row.
Shape Shoulders and
Back Neck
Cast off 4 (5, 5, 6) sts at beginning of next 2 rows – 55 (61, 69, 75) sts.
Next row – Cast off 4 (5, 6, 6) sts, knit until there are 17 (18, 20, 22) sts on right-hand needle, turn and leave remaining 34 (38, 43, 47) sts on a spare needle.
Cast off 4 sts at beginning (neck edge) of next row, 4 (5, 6, 7) sts at beginning of next row and 4 sts at beginning of following row –  5 (5, 6, 7) sts.
Cast off.
With right side facing, slip centre 13 (15, 17, 19) sts onto a stitch holder, rejoin yarn at neck and knit to end.
Complete to match 1st side, reversing shaping.

Left Front
With 3¾ mm needles and M, cast on 43 (47, 53, 57) sts and work 6 cm in rib as for back.
Change to 4.50 mm needles. 
Beginning with a knit row, continue in st-st, decreasing 1 st at side edge on every following 5th row until 38 (42, 48, 52) sts remain, then increase 1 st at side edge on every following 8th row until there are 43 (47, 53, 57) sts.
Continue straight until front measures same as back to beginning of armhole shaping, ending with a wrong-side row.
Shape Armhole
Cast off 6 (7, 8, 9) sts at beginning of next row – 37 (40, 45, 48) sts.
Work 1 row.
Decrease 1 st at armhole edge on next 6 rows – 31 (34, 39, 42) sts Join in B.**
Next row – *K2B, 2M; repeat from * to last 3 (2, 3, 2) sts, K2B, K1 (0, 1 ,0) M.
Break off yarns.
Join in A and work 3 rows in st-st.
Continue from chart, thus:
1st row (right side) –  Work 1 (5, 3, 1) sts, before dotted line, work  12-st pattern repeat 2 (2, 3, 3) times, work 6 (5, 0, 5) sts beyond dotted line.
2nd row – Work 6 (5, 0, 5) sts before dotted, work 12-st pattern repeat 2 (2, 3, 3) times, work 1 (5, 3, 1) sts beyond dotted line.
Continue  as now set until all 11 chart rows have been worked.
Continue in A only until front measures 13 rows less than back to beginning of shoulder shaping, thus ending with a right-side row.
Shape Neck
Cast off 5 (5, 7, 7) sts at beginning of next row – 26 (29, 32, 35) sts.
Decrease 1 st at neck edge on next 9 rows – 17 (20, 23, 26) sts. 
Work 3 rows straight, thus ending at side edge.
Shape Shoulder
Cast off 4 (5, 5, 6) sts at beginning of next row, 4 (5, 6, 6) sts on following alternate row, then 4 (5, 6, 7) sts on following alternate row – 5 (5, 6, 7) sts.
Work 1 row.
Cast off.

Right Front
Work as for left front to **.
Next row – K1 (0, 1, 0) M, 2B *2M, 2B; repeat from * to end.
Break off yarns.
Join in A and work 3 rows in st-st.
Continue from chart, thus:
1st row (right side) –  Work 5 (4, 11, 4) sts before dotted line, work 12-st pattern repeat 2 (2, 2, 3) times, work 2 (6, 4, 2) sts beyond dotted line.
Continue as for left front, reversing shaping.

Sleeves (BothAlike)
With 3¾ mm needles and M, cast on 47 (51, 55, 59) sts and work 6 cm in rib as for back.
Change to 4½ mm needles.
Beginning with a knit row, continue in st-st, increasing 1 st at each end of every following 7th (6th, 5th, 5th) rows until there are 69 (77, 85, 93) sts.
Continue straight until sleeve measures 45 cm, ending with a wrong-side row.
Shape Top
Cast off 6 (7, 8, 9) sts at beginning of next 2 rows – 57 (63, 69, 75) sts.
Work 2 rows straight, then decrease 1 st at each end of next row – 55 (61, 67, 73) sts.
Work 1 row.
Join in B.
Next row – K2togM, *K2B, 2M; repeat from * to last 5 (7, 5, 3)sts, K2 (2, 2, 1) B, 1 (2, 1, 0) M, 0( 1, 0, 0) B, K2tog M – 53 (59, 65, 71) sts.
Break off yarn.
Join in A and work 3 rows in st-st.
Continue from chart, thus:
1st row – K2togA, work 0 (3, 0, 3) sts before dotted line, work 12-st pattern repeat 4 (4, 5, 5) times, work 1 (4, 1, 4) sts beyond dotted line, K2togA – 51 (57, 63, 69) sts.
Continue as now set until all 11 rows have been worked, at the same time decreasing 1 st at each end of every following alternate row – 41 (47, 53, 59) sts.
Continue in A only.
Work 1 row.
Cast off 3 sts at beginning of every row until 23 sts remain.
Cast off.

Button Band
With 3¾ mm needles and M, cast on 9 sts and work in rib as for back until band, when slightly stretched, fits up left front to beginning of neck shaping, ending with a wrong-side row. 
Cast off.
Sew in position.
Mark the position of 9 buttons, the first 2 cm up from cast-on edge, the last 2 cm down from cast-off edge and remainder spaced evenly between.

Buttonhole Band
Work as for button band making buttonholes to correspond with markers, thus:
1st buttonhole row (right side) –  Rib 3, cast off next 2 sts, rib to end.
2nd buttonhole row – Rib, casting on 2 sts over those cast off on previous row.

Collar
Join shoulder seams.
With 3¾ mm needles and B, and beginning at last st on buttonhole band, pick up and K19 (19, 21, 21) sts up right front neck, 6 sts down right back neck, K13 (15, 17, 19) back neck sts, pick up and K 6 sts up left back neck, 19 (19, 21, 21) sts down left front neck and into first st on button band – 63 (65, 71, 73) sts.
Next row – K2, m1, *P1, K1; repeat from * to last 3 sts, P1, m1, K2.
Next row – P2, rib to last 2 sts, P2.
Next row – K2, m1, *K1, P1; repeat from * to last 3 sts, K1, m1, K2.
Continue as now set, increasing on every following alternate row, until there are 85 (87, 93, 95)sts and collar measures 10 cm.
Cast off in rib.

to make up
 
Sew in sleeves, easing to fit,  then join side and sleeve seams.
Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes.
Do not press.
