Mary Anne Morrison, Cluster - Riches of Stitches Award Winner

Award: Construction Prize for most outstanding work using stitch to construct raised or three-dimensional work, or structures.

"The winning design was developed when exploring the concept of “Rhythm”. The pieces evolved from exploring strength, movement end tension through the manipulation of paper, fabric and thread, repeating substances and processes are central to the investigation. I bring together the man-made and organic; contained and uncontrolled; purity and colour; measured and accidental. However, the tension this creates does not jar but forms a gentle harmony."

Mary Anne Morrison lives in East Anglia where she runs a school uniform shop, breeds golden retrievers and looks after a flock of rare breed sheep, which keeps her really busy at springtime.

After a serious neck injury which prevented Mary from playing golf in her spare time, she decided to take up textiles and enrolled in a master class. "I always had a sewing kit on the go which I enjoyed. Since then I have never looked back, I've found a new side of me which is fantastic."

"I enjoy experimenting with all kinds of fabric, papers and threads. I am always trying new ideas, working them through and pushing them as far as they will go, taking them to the extreme and never giving up. I have also discovered never to throw anything away and mistakes can be the making of a masterpiece."

Mary first became a member of the Embroiders Guild through reading the Embroidery magazine. She has now been a member for 12 years and enjoys meeting other textile artists and exhibiting her designs.
