instructions

Mark the centre of the aida fabric, lengthways and widthways with a line of basting stitches. The diagram gives the complete design, centre indicated by arrows which should coincide with the basting stitches. Each background square on the diagram represents one block of fabric or one cross stitch or back stitch. The design is worked throughout in cross stitch and back stitch.

Commence embroidery centrally, following diagram, key to diagram and stitch diagrams. On completion of embroidery, press lightly on wrong side, taking care not to spoil the design.

cross stitch and single cross stitch

First bring the thread through at the lower right hand side, insert the needle 1 block of fabric up and 1 block of fabric to the left and bring out 1 block of fabric down, thus forming a half cross, continue in this way to the end of the row. Complete the upper half of the cross as shown.

To work a single cross stitch, work the first half of the cross, but then take the needle back down 1 block of fabric up and one block of fabric to the right to complete. Cross stitch may be worked either from right to left or left to right but it is important that the upper half of all crosses should lie in the same direction.
