Making the Patchwork Cut a strip, measuring 5cm x 20cm, from each color of fabric. With right sides together, and using 0.5cm seam allowance throughout, sew 2 strips together along one long edge. Repeat with the other 2 strips.
Press seams towards the darker fabric. Repeat again to stitch the 2 sets of strips together.
Place this piece of patchwork onto the Stitch 'n' Tear and tack into position (the Stitch 'n' Tear will remain on the back of the embroidery and should not be removed).
Working the Machine Embroidery Using the pre-set embroidery stitches on your machine and the Alcazar threads, stitch straight and wavy lines across the patchwork parallel to the seams (chart 1).
If your machine does not have pre-set stitches, use zig-zag stitch and vary the width and length. The Pincushion shows Feather stitch over each seam and Running stitch and Reinforced Straight Stitch in between.
Cutting the Patchwork Place you Patchwork onto the cutting mat, with the stitching lines horizontal. Using the ruler and rotary cutter, cut the patchwork into 4 wedge shaped strips (chart 1).
Rearrange these new strips by turning the first and third pieces round the other way so that the patches get mixed up. Play around until you are satisfied with the overall effect. Join the strips together, offsetting the seams. Press.
Embellishing the Patchwork Lay 4 lengths of Anchor Pearl Multicolor randomly at right angles to the machine embroidery lines. Couch these lengths using machine zigzag and Anchor Alcazar 851.
Stitch several straight or wavy lines, using different pre-set machine stitches, in between the couched lines, using Anchor Alcazar. Add French Knots and Seeding Stitches using 2 strands of Anchor Stranded Multicolor (Chart 2). |
