Customising Clothes

Got a busy Festive Season planned but not got the cash to match? Want to wow the Christmas crowds with stunning party looks, but your wardrobe doesn’t quite meet the challenge?

Then customising is the way forward for you! There’s lots of ways to customise your existing wardrobe without breaking the bank or stretching your crafting skills too far.

For a quick fix, why not use Gold-Zack iron-on motifs to bring an outfit right up to date, add a bit of sparkle or just change the look and feel of a piece? These are really easy and fast to use, and come in a variety of different styles. They’re great for all sorts of clothes and accessories including bags, wraps and shoes.

Prym also have a range of press-on rhinestones in a variety of sizes – these are great for adding just a little bit of sparkle and glamour without going over the top.

Embroidery and stitching into a piece is also a great way to give it a new lease of life, without breaking the bank. A few stitches here and there, particularly in a metallic thread or red or green can give a piece a really festive look.

Why not try trimming the edges of a skirt or collar with something Christmassy? Whisper or Lulu yarn from Patons are great eyelash “fur effect” yarns which can easily be added to an edge to give it a “tinsel” feel without having to steal it from the Christmas tree!

If you don’t want to add anything to a piece of clothing in case you need it in its present form, why not add onto a bag, gloves, shoes or a wrap or stole to update your accessories instead? These can be easily made festive with a few diamantes, a few stitches and a motif.

Look at Charlotte Liddle’s work for inspiration and ideas – she combines different techniques and products to get a great effect – she cuts into the motifs, using pieces of them rather than the whole thing, embellishes with rhinestones and beading and finishes off with some French knots or some yarn to bring the whole look together.

The effect is simple yet stylish – and oh-so-easy to achieve.
