Wedding Day Saviour

On your wedding day, there’s so much to worry about. Will everyone have a good time? Will the photographer show up? What can go wrong? The last thing you want is your dress to be dirty, damaged or less than perfect in any way.

We’ve all heard the horror stories – the groom who drops the pen while he’s signing the register and gets ink on the dress. The strap that breaks, leaving the dress hanging off one shoulder, the hem that comes down – there’s so many things which can prey on your mind. What would you do if it happened to you?

Why not build yourself a little emergency kit for these eventualities? One bride we spoke to carried a gorgeous little dolly bag which matched her dress and as well as the usual in there (tissues, lipstick and cash!) there were a few secret little additions which were there “just in case”.

Firstly she took some tailors white chalk. This is perfect for any smudges and small discolorations on the dress (as long as it’s white or cream – don’t use blue unless your dress is blue!). A Dress Maker’s chalk square from Prym (611812) is ideal. It’s small enough to tuck into a little bag (either your own or a bridesmaid’s).

All you have to do is rub a little onto the area with the stain or mark. It’s great for temporarily covering red wine spots, biro, grubby fingerprints or any other small marks on a dress. If someone tips a pint of beer over you though, it’s not going to do much good!

Safety pins are also a safe bet. If you don’t need one yourself, someone else is bound to. So if a strap snaps or stitching comes undone, or even if you’ve lost a bit of weight since your last fitting and the dress needs pulling in a little (nerves can be a great diet for a few days!), a safety pin can be a great emergency fixer.

Prym’s range of safety pins come in great variety of sizes. It’s best to take a few different sizes as you can’t be sure what they’ll be needed for!

You can also not go wrong with having a little mini sewing kit on stand-by at the venue. Again, you can carry it yourself, ask a bridesmaid or give it to an usher to find a safe home for.

All you need it is pair of small scissors (such as Prym Embroidery Scissors (611411), some thread in the colour of your dress (Sylko or Drima threads are ideal depending on what your dress is made of) and an ordinary sewing needle.

That way if there is a small tear, a hem starts to come down etc, you’ve got your own emergency kit right there. No rushing about trying to find thread that matches!

If you don’t want to put together your own little sewing kit, Prym have several small sewing kits which would be a good starting point.

Firstly there’ s Bon Voyage (651255) which has scissors, needles, pins, buttons, a threader and threads. There’s also Travel Box (621237) which has sew-on snap fasteners, shirt buttons (ideal for the groom!), sewing needles, threads, pins, threader, safety pins and scissors with plastic handles.

The second Travel Box (651239) has the same contents but has metal scissors, tape measure, seam ripper, bodkin, thimble, extra thread colours and glass headed pins. These are also perfect for the honeymoon too.

Another great product for your kit is the Prym Hoisery Ladder Mender (611840/843) which means even if you rip your tights or stockings, there’s help at hand.

Just thinking a little in advance of things that could go wrong can help make sure that when it does, you’re prepared. Everyone wants their wedding day to be perfect and Prym can help! Call Coats Crafts UK Consumer Services (01325) 394237 for stockists and more information.
