instructions |

Cut a square of Saffron dupion silk fabric 45 cm x 45 cm for backing fabric from Bronze and put to one side.
The optional pieces of zip fastener have the ends cut off and the two halves are separated, to be used singly for embellishment only.
Rouleau Loops Cut 5 cm bias strips from Fabric C. Fold in half lengthways to form a tube. Trim seams and turn to right side using the Prym Rouleau loop turner. This tube can then be stuffed with wool if desired, then inserted into seams as you go along (see finished model) |

how to make the patchwork cushion front |
| |
|
The pieces of coloured fabric will be applied to the Foundation fabric. Start from the centre shape and work around the outer edges of the shape in a spiral, working towards the outer edges of the foundation fabric.
Fig 1 Start by cutting out a 5-sided piece of fabric A and pinning it in the centre of the foundation fabric – there is no need to sew it in place. You will find that using a Rotary Cutter, Ruler and Cutting mat makes it so much easier to create straight edges and you can also cut through multiple layers at once, saving time.
Fig 2: To Attach the Second Piece From fabric B cut out a strip slightly longer than the side edge of Fabric A. With raw edges matching and right sides together, place this second piece along one edge of the centred piece. Using a straight stitch and a 0.5 cm seam allowance, sew in place through all layers of fabric. Trim the seam allowance. Fold fabric B over to right side. Using an iron, press the seam open.
Top-stitching: If desired, use a decorative stitch and sew along the top of the seam or to either side of it.
Fig 3 : To Attach the Third Piece From fabric C, cut out a third strip and with raw edges even and right sides together, place this third piece along one edge of the centre piece and up the side edge of fabric B piece, trapping the tape of a zip fastener in the seam allowance. Using a straight stitch and a 0.5 cm seam allowance, sew in place through all layers of fabric. Trim the seam allowance. Fold fabric C over to right side. Using an iron, press the seam open.
Fig 4 This shows how the design looks when pieces are ironed to right side.
To Attach the Fourth Piece: From fabric A, cut out a fourth strip and with raw edges even and right sides together, place this fourth piece along one edge of the centre piece and up the side edge of fabric C piece. Using a straight stitch and a 0.5 cm seam allowance, sew in place through all layers of fabric. Trim the seam allowance. Fold fabric A over to right side. Using an iron, press the seam open.
Continue in this manner working all round the edges, working outwards until the foundation fabric is covered.
Hint: You may find that towards the outer edges it is difficult to cut pieces long enough to go the whole length across. To remedy this, you could sew smaller blocks of contrast fabrics together to form a single strip.
Once your patchwork is large enough, trim the edges to form a square, 3 cm larger than the cushion pad, widthways and lengthways, to allow for seam allowances.
Following manufacturers’ instructions, cover the buttons using Bronze silk. Sew randomly onto patchwork.
Further Embellishment Once you have completed your cushion panel, you could further embellish it further with buttons, ribbon roses, bows, buckles, beads. |
