22 sts and 30 rows to 10cm (stocking stitch) on 4.00mm needles or size needed to achieve stated tension.

Left Mitten

**With 3.25mm needles and MS, cast on 49sts.

Row 1- (RS) K1, *P1, K1; rep from * to end.

Row 2- P1, *K1, P1; rep from * to end.

These 2 rows form rib.

Rep last 2 rows until rib measures 15cm, ending with row 1 and RS facing for next row.

Dec row – P1, P2tog, *P3, P2tog; rep from * to last st, P1 (39sts).

Change to 4.00 mm needles and join in C.

Beg with a K row, work in striped st st as follows;

Rows 1 & 2 – In C.

Rows 3 & 4 – In MS.

These 4 rows form stripe st st patt.

Cont in patt for a further 12 rows, ending with RS facing for next row.**

Divide for thumb opening

Keeping stripe patt correct, work as follows;

Next row – (RS) K18, Inc in next st, turn, leaving remaining sts on a holder.

Work a further 11 rows.

Next row – K18, K2tog.

Break yarn and leave these 19sts on a stitch holder.

Rejoin appropriate coloured yarn to sts left on previous holder, inc in first st, K to end (21 sts).

Work a further 11 rows.

Next row – K2tog, K to end.

Join sections

Next row – (WS) P20 sts of back of hand, then P19 sts of palm of hand (39 sts).

***Work a further 10 rows, ending with row 4 of stripe patt and RS facing for next row.

Break off C and continue in MS only.

Change to 3.25 mm needles and work 4 rows in rib as for cuff, ending with RS facing for next row.

Cast off.

Right Mitten

Work as for left mitt from ** to **.

Shape thumb opening

Keeping stripe patt correct, work as follows;

Next row – (RS) K19, Inc in next st, turn, leaving remaining sts on a holder.

Work a further 11 rows.

Next row – K19, K2tog.

Break yarn and leave these 20sts on a holder.

Rejoin appropriate coloured yarn to sts left on previous holder, inc in first st, K to end (19 sts).

Work a further 11 rows.

Next row – K2tog, K to end.

Join sections

Next row – (WS) P19 sts of palm of hand, then P20 sts of back of hand (39 sts).

Complete as for Left Mitt from *** to ***.
