Give your home a bit of eastern promise this summer with the hot new Arabian Nights trend. Think rich jewel colours, lots of pattern, coloured glass, twinkling lanterns and dark wood for a room that’s perfect for relaxing in.

The key colours to look out for are rich reds, greens, blues, gold and fuchsia. Stick to a combination of bright and deep shades and steer clear of pastels. In a bright, sunny room you can use these rich colours on walls; in a darker room, keep to cream on the walls and use soft furnishings or flooring to create the look.

A multi-coloured woven rug is a great place to start your room scheme; you can then pick out a couple of the colours in the rug to base the rest of your scheme on. 

Run up lots of cushions in luxurious satins and silks and pile them up on beds or chairs or, for a really Arabian look, place them on the floor around a low coffee table for some low-level seating.

Ditch the boring blinds and make some coloured chiffon or muslin drapes instead. They will let in the light but create a more colourful effect. You can layer a couple of different colours for a really pretty look.

Coloured glass is another key part of this trend, so look out for Moroccan tea glasses and use them as tea-light holders. They look great inside or out and will instantly create the Arabian Nights atmosphere you’re after. All you’ll need to finish the look is some sunshine!
