Felted Bag with Flower and Leaves motifs project

This beautiful felted wool handbag is strong enough to keep it's shape and unlined for simple hand washing. It has been designed by Penny Santer using Patons Jet, a soft wool mix yarn, available is a variety of both solid and colour mix shades.

Penny works in an independent craft shop, offering friendly expert advice in Nailsea, near Bristol called Inside Art. The shop offers a wide range of classes and demonstrations which run continually throughout the year.

 

materials required

 

Patons Jet yarn

Prym Knitting Needle: 8 mm

rose 1

 

Using 8mm. needles and 2 strands of Patons Jet cast on 10 sts

Row.1. [right side] knit

Rows. 2, 4, 6, & 8. purl

Row.3. Knit into the front and back of each st. [20. sts]

Row.5. Knit into the front and back of each st [40. sts]

Row.7. Knit into the front and back of each st [80.sts]

Cast off knitwise

Roll up cast on edge and stitch in place.

Using 8mm. needles and 2 strands of Patons Jet cast on 101 sts.~

Row. 1. [wrong side] Purl

Row.2. K2. *k1 and slip it back onto left-hand needle, with right-hand needle lift next 8 sts, one at a time over this st. and off the needle, yo twice, k the first st again, k2. repeat from * end with p1.

Row 3, P1.* p2tog. Drop first yo. of previous row; k into the front; back; front, back, and front again into the second yo loop [5 sts. made] p1 repeat from * end with p1.

Row.4. Knit

Cast off knitwise, roll up cast off edge and stitch in place.

Using 8mm. needles and 2 strands of Patons Jet cast on 96 sts.

Row 1. Knit

Row.2. Purl

Row.3. Knit

Row.4. Purl

Row.5. K8 *rotate left needle 180 degrees, k8 repeat from * to end of row

Row.6. Purl

Row.7 K2tog to end of row

Row.8. Pur12tog to end of row

Cast off knitwise, roll up cast off edge and stitch in place.

Using 8mm. needles and 2 strands of Patons Jet cast on 9 sts.

Next row. Knit

Next row. Cast off 8 sts

Next row. Cast on 8sts and knit

Repeat last 2 rows until 20 petals are completed.

Cast off.

Gather the bottom edge of flower and pull up tight, fasten thread securely.

Using 8mm needles and 2 strands of Patons Jet cast on 1 st.

Row. 1. Knit into front, back and front of stitch. [3 sts]

Row.2. Purl

Row.3. Knit into front and back of first st., K1, knit into front and back of last st

Row.4. Purl

Row.5. Kl., k into front and back of next st., kl., k into front and back of next st., k1 [5 sts]

Row 6. Purl

Row.7 k2., k into the front and back of next st., kl., k into front and back of next st; K2 [7 sts]

Row.8. Purl.

Continue to increase on each side of centre st., on every knit row until there are 11 sts

Row. 12. Purl

Row. 13. K2tog., knit to last 2 sts k2tog

Repeat rows 12 and 13 until 3 sts are left

Knit 3 tog ., cut wool and pull end through st.

Darn in all ends.
