Felted Wool Handbag

Felted handbag project

This beautiful felted wool handbag is strong enough to keep it's shape and unlined for simple hand washing. It has been designed by Penny Santer using Patons Jet, a soft wool mix yarn, available is a variety of both solid and colour mix shades.

Penny works in an independent craft shop, offering friendly expert advice in Bristol called Inside Art. The shop offers a wide range of classes and demonstrations which run continually throughout the year.

 

materials required

 

Patons Jet yarn:
4 x 50g balls of a plain shade (model used 00605)
4 x 50g balls of a colour mix shade (model used 00004)

Prym Circular Knitting Needles: 6.5mm & 10mm

Prym Double Pointed Needles: 6.5mm


abbreviations

 

K= knit, K2 tog= knit 2 sts together, Kfb= knit into the front and back of the next stitch [increase made], st(s)= stitch(es), mm= millimetres, cm= centimetre, ins= inches


instructions

 

Using 6.5mm circular needle and double strand of plain colour 00605 cast on 68sts. Join into a ring [make sure the ring is not twisted]

Round. 1. Knit

Round. 2. Purl

Repeat rounds 1 and 2 for 14 rounds

Round 15. [k1, K2tog.] repeat to last 2 sts, K2 tog.[45 sts]

Round 16. Kfb into every stitch. [90 sts]

Change to size 10mm circular needle and remove 1 strand of plain colour 00605 and replace with 1 strand of colour mix 00004.

Round 17. Knit.

Repeat round 17 until piece measures 15cms.[6 ins.]

Remove 1 strand of plain colour yam 00605 and replace with 1 strand of colour mix 00004.

Repeat round 17 for another 7.5 cms. [3 ins.]

Remove 1 strand of colour mix 00004 and replace with 1 strand of plain colour 00605.

Repeat round 17 for another 7.5 cms. [3 ins]

Base Shaping

Round.1. *K7, K2tog*, repeat from *to* to end of round.

Rounds 2. & 3. Knit.

Round. 4. * K6, K2tog,* repeat from *to* to end of round.

Rounds 5. & 6. Knit.

Round. 7.* K5, K2tog,* repeat from *to* to end of round.

Rounds 8. & 9. Knit

Round. 10. *K4, K2tog.* repeat from *to* end of round.

Round. 11. Knit.

Cast off

Turn bag inside out and stitch the bottom seam.


handles (make 2)

 

Using 1 pair double pointed needles size 6.5mm. and double yarn, 1 strand of each colour, cast on 5 sts. and knit 1 row.

*Push sts to other end of needle, and take yarn across the back of sts. and knit* repeat this until piece measures 51 cms. [20 ins.]


pocket (make 1 or 2 as required)

 

Using double yarn and size 10mm. circular needle.

Cast on 30 sts. and knit 20cms. [8.ins] (knit back and forwards not in rounds)

Cast off

Sew in all ends.


felting

 

Put all pieces in washing machine and set to a 40 degree wash programme, [only use a very small amount of washing powder, about a heaped teaspoon]. Check to make sure that enough felting has taken place, if not repeat the programme again. Pull bag into shape and stuff with paper [or plastic carrier bags] until dry. Sew the handles in place.

Stitch the pocket piece inside the front of the bag, and repeat on the inside of the back if 2 pockets are required.
