1st row: P1, [k1, p1] to end.
2nd row and every alternate row: Inc, p to last st, inc.
3rd row: K1, p1, [k5, p1] to last st, k1.
5th row: K2, p1, [k5, p1] to last 2 sts, k2.
7th row: K3, p1, [k5, p1] to last

Pattern 57 (65) rows. Cast off. Mark 33 (39) sts in from each side for shoulders.
Left Front
With No. 9 (3¾ mm) needles, cast on 61 (67) sts. 1st row: P1, [k1, p1] to end.
2nd row and every alternate row: P to last st, inc.
3rd row: K1, p1, [k5, p1] to end.
5th row: K2, p1, [k5, p1] to end.
7th row: K3, p1, [k5, p1] to end.
8th row: As 2nd row.
The last 8 rows set the pattern.
Pattern 1 row. Continuing in pattern as set and working extra sts into pattern as they occur, inc 1 st at end of next row and 7 following alternate rows — 73 (79) sts.

Shape neck: Next row: Pattern to last 11 sts and turn, leave the remaining 11 sts on a safety-pin — 51 (57) sts.
Cast off 2 sts at beginning of next row and dec 1 st at end of following row. Repeat the last 2 rows, 5 times more — 33 (39) sts. Pattern 4 rows. Cast off.
Right Front
With No. 9 (3¾ mm) needles, cast on 61 (67) sts. 1st row: P1, [k1, p1] to end. 2nd row and every alternate row: Inc, p to end.
3rd row: P1, [k5, p1] to last st, k1. 5th row: P1, [k5, p1] to last 2 sts, k2. 7th row: P1, [k5, p1] to last 3 sts, k3. 8th row: As 2nd row. The last 8 rows set the pattern. Pattern 1 row. Buttonhole row: Pattern 3, yf, k2tog, pattern to end.

Shape armhole: Cast off 7 sts at beginning of next row. Dec 1 st at end of next row and 4, following alternate rows — 62 (68) sts.
Pattern 41 (49) rows, noting that 1st buttonhole of 6th set of 2, will be completed.
Shape neck: Next row: Pattern 11 and sl these sts on a safety-pin, pattern to end — 51 (57) sts.
Dec 1 st at end of next row and cast off 2 sts at beginning of following row. Repeat the last 2 rows, 5 times more — 33 (39) sts. Pattern 4 rows. Cast off.
Left Sleeve
With No. 9 (3¾ mm) needles, cast on 67 (73) sts.
1st row: P1, [k1, p1] to end.
2nd and every alternate row: P. 3rd row: P1, [k5, p1] to end.
5th (buttonhole) row: P1, k2, yf, k2tog, k1, p1, [k5, p1] to end. 7th row: As 3rd row.
8th row: As 2nd row.
The last 8 rows set the pattern. Pattern another 4 rows, then repeat the buttonhole row again. Pattern 2 rows. Cast off 5 sts at beginning of next row for cuff facing — 62 (68) sts. Pattern another 4 rows. ** Working extra sts into pattern as they occur, inc 1 st at each end of next row and 17 following 6th rows — 98 (104) sts. Pattern 25 rows.
Shape top: Cast off 6 sts — read 7 sts here for right sleeve — at beginning of next row and 7 sts — read 6 sts here for right sleeve — on following row.
Dec 1 st at each end of next row and 5 (3) following alternate rows — 73 (83) sts. Pattern 7 (9) rows. Dec 1 st at each end of next row, the nil (3) following alternate rows, then on next 5 (1) row(s) —61 (73) sts. Cast off.
Right Sleeve
With No. 9 (3¾ mm) needles, cast on 67 (73) sts.
1st row: P1, [k1, p1] to end.
2nd and every alternate row: P. 3rd row: P1, [k5, p1] to end.
5th (buttonhole) row: P1, [k5, p1] to last 6 sts, k1, skpo, yf, k2, p1. 7th row: As 3rd row.
8th row: As 2nd row.
Pattern another 4 rows, then repeat the buttonhole row again. Pattern 3 rows. Cast off 5 sts at beginning of next row for cuff facing — 62 (68) sts.
Pattern another 3 rows. Work as left sleeve from ** to end, noting variation.
Neckband
Join shoulder seams. With right side facing, slip 11 sts from right front safety-pin onto No. 9 (3¾ mm) needle with point to inner end, rejoin yarn and pick up and k21 sts up right front neck, 51 sts across back neck, 21 sts down left front neck, then pattern 11 sts from left front safety-pin — 115 sts.
Pattern 16 rows across all sts, making buttonholes as before on 4th and 12th of these rows.
