Sweetie Pie

Sweetie Pie - Knitted Toy Sheep Project

Lambs are always associated with springtime and this adorable knitted lamb project is a great way to mark the turn of the seasons. Taken from the Patons Hazy Dayz pattern booklet, it’s perfect as a crafty project for an enthusiastic knitter or to give as a gift for someone special in your life.

 

materials required

 

2 x 50g Balls of Patons DK yarn in MS (we have outlined below appropriate yarns, please feel free to choose your own colour combinations by visiting the links and viewing their shade ranges):

Make loop= insert right needle into next st as though to K this st, take yarn around needle in usual way, (wind yarn round first finger of left hand and then round needle again) twice, draw all 3 loops on right needle through st on left needle leaving st on left needle, K this st again through back of loop and let it slip off left needle, then lift the 3 loops over this new st and off right needle. 24 sts and 34 rows to 10 cm (stocking stitch) on 31/4 mm needles or size needed to achieve stated tension.


instructions

 

Face

With 31/4 mm needles and C, cast on 5 sts.

Row 1 – (RS), inc once knitways in each of first 4 sts, K1 (9 sts).

Starting with a P row, cont in stocking st thus:

Work 5 rows.

Row 7 – K1, K2tog, K3, sL1K, K1, psso, K1 (7 sts).

Work 5 rows, ending with RS facing for next row.

Break yarn.

With RS facing, knit up 10 sts along first row-end edge, from cast-on edge to sts on needle, work across 7 sts on needle thus: K2tog, K3, sL1K, K1, psso, then knit up 10 sts down other row-end edge to cast-on edge (25 sts).

Work 1 row.

Row 15 – K10, inc in next st, K2, inc in next st, K11 (27 sts).

Work 1 row.

Row 17 – K10, inc in next st, K4, inc in next st, K11 (29 sts).

Work 3 rows.

Row 21 – K11, K2tog, K3, sL1K, K1, psso, K11 (27 sts).

Work 1 row.

Row 23 – K1, K2tog, K7, K2tog, K3, sL1K, K1, psso, K7, sL1K, K1, psso, K1 (23 sts).

Work 1 row.

Row 25 – K1, K2tog, K5, K2tog, K3, sL1K, K1, psso, K5, sL1K, K1, psso, K1 (19 sts).

Work 1 row.

Cast off.

Back

With 31/4 mm needles and MS, cast on 21 sts.

Row 1 – (RS), Knit.

Row 2 – K1, *make loop; rep from * to last st, K1.

These 2 rows form loop patt.

Keeping loop patt correct, complete as follows:

Row 3 – K1, K2tog, K to last 3 sts, sL1K, K1, psso, K1 (19 sts).

Working all decreases as set by last row, dec 1 st at each end of 2nd and foll alt row (15 sts).

Work 1 row.

Break yarn.

With RS facing, knit up 10 sts along first row-end edge, from cast-on edge to sts on needle, work across 15 sts on needle thus: K2tog, K11, sL1K, K1, psso, then knit up 10 sts down other row-end edge to cast-on edge (33 sts).

Work 9 rows.

Working all decreases as set by row 3, dec 1 st at each end of next and every foll 4th row until 27 sts rem.

Work 9 rows.

Working all decreases as set by row 3, dec 1 st at each end of next and foll 3 alt rows (19 sts).

Work 9 rows.

Place marker on centre st of last row.

Next row – K to within 1 st of marked st, sL1K, K2tog (marked st is first st of this group of 2 sts), psso, K to end.

Work 1 row.

Rep last 2 rows 6 times more (5 sts).

Cast off.

Front

With 31/4 mm needles and MS, cast on 21 sts.

Starting with a K row, cont in loop pattern thus:

Work 10 rows.

Row 11 – K1, K2tog, K to last 3 sts, sL1K, K1, psso, K1 (19 sts).

Working all decreases as set by last row, dec 1 st at each end of 4th and foll 4th row (15 sts).

Work 9 rows.

Working all decreases as set by row 11, dec 1 st at each end of next and foll 4 alt rows (5 sts).

Work 1 row.

Cast off.

Legs (Make 2)

With 31/4 mm needles and C, cast on 5 sts.

Starting with a K row, cont in stocking st thus:

Work 3 rows.

Cast on 5 sts at beg of next 2 rows (15 sts).

Work 17 rows.

Place marker on centre st of last row.

Next row– K to within 1 st of marked st, inc once in each of next 2 sts (marked st is 2nd st of this group of 2 sts), K to end.

Work 1 row.

Rep last 2 rows 3 times more (23 sts).

Work 6 rows.

Cast off.

Arms (Make2)

With 31/4 mm needles and C, cast on 15 sts.

Starting with a K row, cont in stocking st thus:

Work 24 rows.

Cast off.

Ears (Make2)

With 31/4 mm needles and C, cast on 9 sts.

Row 1 – (RS), K9.

Row 2 – K1, P7, K1.

Rows 3 to 6 – As rows 1 and 2, twice.

Row 13 – K3, sL1K, K2tog, psso, K3 (7 sts).

Row 14 – K1, P5, K1.

Row 15 – K2, sL1K, K2tog, psso, K2 (5 sts).

Row 16 – K1, P3, K1.

Row 17 – K1, sL1K, K2tog, psso, K1 (3 sts).

Row 18 – K1, P1, K1.

Row 19 – sL1K, K2tog, psso and fasten off.


make up

 

Do not press.

Sew cast-on edge of Face to cast-off edge of Front, then sew cast-on edge of Front to cast-on edge of Back. Join side seams to top of Front, then sew remainder of Back to top of Face, leaving an opening to insert filling.

Insert toy filling, then sew opening closed. Join leg seams, then sew hoof flaps in place. Insert toy filling and close cast-off edges. Sew cast-off edges of Legs to base of Front. Sew arm seams and insert toy filling. Sew cast-off edges of Arms to side seams just below Face.

Curling up cast-on edge slightly, sew cast-on edges of Ears to sides of head section as in photograph.

Using photograph as a guide and brown yarn, embroider straight stitches through ends of Legs and Arms to define hooves. For eyes, embroider curved lines of buttonhole stitch. For nose, work 2 lazy daisy stitches radiating out from one point, then embroider back stitch mouth below, as in photograph.
