The two fabric pieces for the Scarf will reduce in length when woven together so will appear longer than required when first knitted.
Patons Softy is uneven in thickness. Ensure you leave longer ends than normal when starting a new ball and sew in all ends securely (use a sewing thread in a toning shade if preferred). |

Larger Section Using 1st C and 7mm needles, loosely cast on 20 sts. Starting and ending with a P row, work in reverse stocking st until work meas approx. 12 cm.
**Divide for Slit Next row – (WS) K10, turn and leave rem sts on spare needle. Work in reverse stocking st for 10 rows. Break yarn.
Rejoin yarn to rem sts, K to end. Turn and work in reverse stocking st for 10 rows.
Next row – P across all 20 sts.
Cont in reverse stocking st for 12 rows.**
Rep from ** to ** 5 times more (6 Slits in total).
Work a further 12 rows in reverse stocking st.
Rep from ** to ** 6 times more (12 Slits made in total).
Cont in reverse stocking st until work meas 12 cm above last Slit made.
Cast off loosely.
Smaller Section
Using 2nd C and 6mm needles, loosely cast on 13 sts and work in rib thus:
Row 1 – (RS), K1, *P1, K1; rep from * to end.
Row 2 – P1, *K1, P1; rep from * to end. These 2 rows form rib patt.
Cont in rib patt for a further 10 rows.
***Keeping patt correct, divide for Slit thus:
Next row - Patt 6, M1, turn and leave rem sts on a spare needle (7 sts).
Next row – P1, *K1, P1; rep from * to end.
Work a further 11 rows.
With RS facing, rejoin yarn to rem sts, patt to end.
Cont in patt for 11 rows.
Next row – (RS), patt 7, work 2tog, patt to end (12 sts)
Cont in patt across all sts for a further 12 rows.***
Repeat from *** to *** until there are 12 Slits worked in total. Cast off in rib.
Diagram 1 – this shows the 2 knitted pieces of fabric.
How to weave Scarf pieces together
Start from the centre working outwards.
With right sides face-up, place Smaller Section (worked in rib) on top of Larger Section.
Diagram 2 - Counting from the left, bring the left side of the Larger Section up through the 6th Slit from left of Smaller Section so that it now lies over the top of Smaller Section. Pull it through until 6 of the Slits on Larger Section are visible.
Diagram 3 - Counting from the left, now bring the left side of the Smaller Section up through the 6th Slit from left of Larger Section so that it now lies over the top of the Larger Section.
Diagram 4 - Counting from the left, bring the left side of the Larger Section up through the 5th Slit from left of Smaller Section so that it now lies over the top of Smaller Section. Pull it through until 5 of the Slits on Larger Section are visible.
Counting from the left, now bring the Smaller Section up through the 5th Slit from left of Larger Section so that it now lies over the top of the Larger Section.
Continue in this way, weaving alternate sections through the adjacent holes working towards the left hand side, taking care not to twist them.
Once complete, work the other side to match, working from centre outwards.
Gently fluff out the side edges of the Larger Section.
Do not dry hand-knitted items in harsh sunlight as fading or yellowing may occur. Take care to support your item when wet (before washing place inside a pillowcase to support it, if preferred). Dry flat on a clean towel, nudging carefully into shape whilst damp. |

Increase row – (WS), K3, *M1 (by picking up horizontal loop lying before next st and working into the back of it), K5, M1, K6; rep from * to last 4 sts, M1, K4 (73 sts). Break 1st C.
Change to 6mm needles, join in 2nd C and work in rib thus:
Row 1 – (RS), P1, *K1, P1; rep from * to end.
Row 2 – K1, *P1, K1; rep from * to end. These 2 rows form rib patt.
Cont in rib patt for a further 22 rows, thus ending with RS facing for next row.
