Tassel Trim Bag

Striped Handbag project with fluffy trimmings

Put the fluff back into festive fashion this winter by creating a chic handbag made using Patons Misty yarn, in a combination of rich jewel like colours.

materials required

 

Patons Misty x 25g balls:
1st C – 1 ball (00010 Chestnut)
2nd C – 2 balls (00012 Damson)
3rd C – 2 balls (00007 Cream)
4th C – 2 balls (00011 Raspberry)
5th C – 2 balls (00005 Vine)

Pair 5.00mm Prym knitting pins

Bag Handles (Prym ‘Keiko’ 615111)

Piece of fabric for lining 50 x 68 cm - Rowan offers a selection of both traditional and contemporary fabrics.

Coats Cotton sewing thread to match fabric


tension

 

Using yarn DOUBLE, 17 sts and 22 rows to 10cm (stocking stitch) on 5.00mm needles or size needed to achieve stated tension.

Using yarn double or 1 length each of 2 colours and working in stocking Stitch throughout.

Bag Base and Front

With 5.00mm needles and 1st C DOUBLE, cast on 65sts.

Starting with a K row, work rows 1 – 22 of stripe patt, place markers at each end of last row. Cont, working rows 23 – 88 of stripe patt. Cast off knitways.

Bag Back

With 5.00mm needles and 2nd C DOUBLE, cast on 65sts.

Starting with a K row, work rows 23 – 88 of stripe patt. Cast off knitways.

Bag Sides (make 2)

With 5.00mm needles and 2nd C DOUBLE, cast on 18sts.

Starting with a K row, work rows 23 – 82 of stripe patt. Cast off knitways.


make up

 

Do NOT press.

Join cast on edges of front and back pieces. Insert side panels joining cast on edge to bag front from cast on point to markers and matching stripe sequence up the sides. Take the piece of fabric for lining and fold in half lengthways RS together, Open out bottom corners to form a triangle shape and stitch a seam across the width of the triangle approx. 10cm in from the point. Turn a 1 cm double hem around the top edge of the lining and press in place. Insert the lining into bag and stitch into position (noting NOT to take it right up to the top on the front and back). Attach bag handles by wrapping over the excess knitted fabric around the bag handle and stitching in place.

Tassels (make 8)

Cut out a piece of card 12 cm in depth.

Using any colour of yarn double, wrap around piece of card 75 times to make each tassel.

To finish, attach 2 tassels to each corner section of the bag.
