Dual Duty is the recommended thread for patchwork and quilting.  The combination of cotton and polyester provides softness to the touch but high resistance to the core of the thread.  The glace finishing binds the plies thus producing strength and abrasion resistance.  The thread can therefore be smoothly sewn through several layers of fabric.
