Amy Butler

Amy Butler is a cult figure in the world of textile design, with fans all over the world. She believes in bringing out the creative spark in everyone, and loves re-inventing vintage looks and enjoying the homemade.

Amy was a creative director at Hallmark Cards in the late 1980s when she started making small bags in Kansas City, USA, selling them to small boutiques in the city.

She moved back to her home town of Ohio in 1992 with her designer husband, David, to start their Art of the Midwest studio. It was here that she eventually began her sewing pattern and fabric design business, and she saw her first real success when she showed her fabric designs at the International Quilt Market.

Now she creates fabric collections for Rowan Fabrics, among others in the US, UK and Japan. Amy Butler Designs also include pillows and quilts, dinnerware, stationery and several sewing and design books.

Her books include In Stitches, Little Stitches for Little Ones, Sew-It Kit, and Amy Butler’s Midwest Modern.

Amy says, “I’ve never given a second thought to being an artist. It’s really who I am, and what I enjoy. I’m inspired by my surroundings, my friends, my family, nature, and the rich textures of everyday life.

“My company, my brand, is really just a great vehicle to share my work. I love meeting other artists and trading notes. I love the process. Everybody has a personal story, and a personal creative voice. I just want to help my ‘friends’ realise it.”
