Rowan 100% Cotton Patchwork Fabric:
1 piece Rowan Fabric (Joel Dewberry – Manzanilla Collection – Damask J002 in Linen) 55 cm x 14 cm

21 pieces of various patterned and plain fabrics 4 x 4 cm square

1 piece Bondaweb 55 x 6 cm

Coats Buttons – 5 large stars (0623) and 6 small stars (0622)

Prym Crewel Needle

2 glass headed pins

To fit a 51cm round Christmas cake (can be lengthened or shortened to fit other size cakes)

Using 0.5 cm seams throughout.

Fold larger piece of fabric in half lengthways and press in a centre line.

Arrange the 4 x 4 cm squares of fabric in a horizontal line mixing up the designs and placing them slightly off centre to each other up and down. Stitch all squares together. Fasten off ends and fold seams onto the back.

Making sure your ironing board is protected (a sheet of baking paper would work as it would be easily removed from any excess glue), place the fabric strip RS facing down on ironing board, position Bondaweb over the top, paper side facing up and iron onto fabric. Cut closely around the fabric strip. Peel of the backing paper and position it onto the main piece of fabric centrally. Iron in place.

Using 2 strands of Anchor Stranded Cotton Multicolour work a line of Running stitch along the top and bottom approx 3 mm from edge of coloured blocks.

Arrange the star buttons randomly along the blocks (approx 1 button every 2 blocks) and sew in place.

Fold piece in half lengthways and sew along the long edge. Turn to RS and press so that the stitched seam runs along the centre of the back. Press in place. Turn in a 0.5 cm allowance at end and stitch together, repeat at other end.

Wrap cake band around cake overlapping excess band at the back and using the pearl head pins, pin into position.
