Young textile designer Charlotte creates and sells embroidered and highly embellished fabric and paper designs for children’s clothing and bedding. She also creates specific commissions and design briefs for various clients.
After graduating in 2005 with a degree in textile crafts she set up in business as a freelance textile designer, maker and tutor.
She combines colour, pattern and texture in her work to create unique and fascinating combinations. Her creations include hand made accessories, ballet shoes, skirts, peg dolls, cards and craft kits, which are sold in places including Liberty and Designers Guild in London.
Her work has been featured in Cross Stitcher and various other craft magazines. Coats Crafts UK published Charlotte’s first craft book, Stitch and Sparkle, in 2007. She has since published a follow-up with co-author Rachel Henderson, called Stitch Divas and aimed at girls aged nine-15.
Charlotte says: “Both Rachel and I are passionate about getting more young people enthusiastic and inspired about stitch and are hoping our book will give them the skills to make their own knitted, crocheted, felted and embroidered textile pieces.”
Charlotte leads weekly stitch groups in Darlington, where she is based, which promote a modern approach to stitch and textile craft.
She is also a workshop leader for Darlington-based company Melting Pot Arts, delivering contemporary textile and costume sessions to both children and adults in schools and community groups.
