Retro flower cushion

Blackwork is a centuries-old technique that originated on garments to create a lace like effect on garment collars and cuffs. This technique is easy to master as it relies on nothing more than the simple backstitch in various combinations.

Here we have reworked blackwork (traditionally done in black) in softer colours and created simple flower motifs to decorate a cushion cover. The ancient technique has created flower shapes that have a 60s retro feel – a look which is very fashionable in home furnishings right now. We think this pretty cushion would look gorgeous accessorising an odd kitchen chair or stool.

Follow our free embroidery pattern to learn how to stitch the flowers, using only a simple combination of cross stitch, back stitch and star stitch. You’ll also find full details in the free pattern on how to make the round cushion cover. We’ve used Free Spirit Moondance fabric to co-ordinate with the flower motifs.
